One of the world’s most remote places, an uninhabited coral atoll, Henderson Island has nearly 38 million pieces of plastic waste piling up on the island.
It is a tiny landmass in eastern South Pacific which has been found by marine scientists to have the highest density of anthropogenic debris recorded anywhere in the world, with 99.8% of the pollution plastic.
The debris is piling up on this once pristine island barely touched by humans, with a staggering 13000 new items washing up on the shores each and every day. Experts are saying marine plastic pollution is the new climate change facing our world.
What can we do to help?
We can choose to refuse single -use plastic each and everyday in July.
It is simple to join and everyone is able to do their bit to help Reduce Refuse or Recycle Plastic so we can help stop the impact mountains of plastic waste is having on our beautiful planet.
There are so many simple things we can all do
- such as switching to a reusable cup for our morning coffee from our favourite coffee shop
- reusable shopping bags at the supermarket ( and if you leave them behind in the car, burn a few calories and grab them)
- reusable water bottles
- say no to prepacked fruit and vegetables ( a ridicious waste to wrap 1 sweet potato on a plastic tray wrap in plastic wrap SHAME !!)
- and even ditch those plastic bags for doggie poo which can be replaced with a paper bag or buy a cornstarch based compostable bag online or from a pet supplier
